Ayrton Senna
- Ayrton Senna da Silva was born on 21 March 1960. A Formula 1 champion and an idol to many, Senna left his mark in Formula 1 history with his driving style, his qualifying speed, and his fearlessness in the rain.
- His family lived in Santana, a wealthy neighborhood of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Growing up, he was diagnosed with a motor coordination problem. His father, a motor racing enthusiast, noticed his son was attracted to cars. At the age of four, Ayrton got a special present – a 1-hp go-kart. When he got behind the wheel, he became a different boy – no longer awkward but focused and confident. From this day on, every weekend, the family would go to local parks where Ayrton could drive his kart. He was an indifferent student but facing the loss of his “driving” privileges, he would apply himself as best he could while his heart was elsewhere. On his tenth birthday, his father gave him a new full-size 100cc kart.
- Senna made his Formula 1 debut in his home country in 1984, driving for the F1 team Toleman. But on this circuit, even the best driver would not be able to make an impression without the Formula 1 car and engine. The team would eventually form the basis for Benetton but, at that time, were a backmarker, and the best that he could do was qualify eighth. The next race at San Marino was a new experience for Ayrton, who failed to qualify. After the initial series of races in his inaugural season, the results were slow in coming.
